Quote: Animals. . .Neither child knew what the word meant, exactly, but it was often used to describe someone uneducated or clumsy, someone who didn't fit in. (p. 7)
Reaction: That's weird that nobdy knows what an animal is. Why don't they know what an animal is? Most people know what an animal is. I wonder if they have any animals in their community. They have salmon, so why don't they know what an animal is. Are animals forbidden in their community? If they are why are they forbidden? I think that all animals besides salmon are forbidden. Does this mean that they're not educated? How do animals affect the community's way of living? I can't wait for the story to answer these questions, if it does.
Vocab: spouse (page 9) "Most of the people on the night crew had not even been given spouses..."
spouse- husband or wife
Chapter 2
Quote : "But to be honest, Jonas," his father said, "for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be." (page 14)
Reaction: That's a young age for a young child to get a job. The community Jonas lives in is different than in what we live in. How come they get to get a job at twelve and we have to be 15 and a half or 16 to get a job? How come the Elders decide what job you will get? Why does everybody turn twelve in December? Everybody has to volunteer at a job site. To me that's very weird. The dad said that he knew what his job was going to be but wasn't the whole point of the Ceremony was to be suprised? The Elders study the kids the kids while they volunteer. To me that's very odd. Why would what job you had matter. Their were a lot o funanswered questions that I would like to know.
Vocab: aptitude (page 17) " Well, it was clear to me- and my parents later confessed that it had been obvious to them, too- what my aptitude was."
aptitude- talent or gift
Chapter 3
Quote: The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade. (p. 24)
Reaction: Does Jonas have a special power or is something wrong with him? How did he notice the apple change but Asher didn't? How did he notice that? Is Jonas seeing things? How come he saw the apple change and then saw it go back to normal? I think Jonas has a special talent of seeing things that other people don't. If Jonas does have a special talnet how did he get it?
Vocab: chastisement (p. 24) "Lily , he dediced, would have to learn that soon, or she would be called in for chastisement beacause of her insensitive chatter.
chatisement-a kick-in-the-butt talk or punishment
Chapter 4
Quote: What happens when they make the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go? (p. 32)
That's what I've been wondering the whole book. Where do the people actuallly go? Are they killed? Are they brainwashed and put into the another community? What's the point of releasing people? Is it so that there are only a small amount of people in the community? I can't wait till the story talks about releasing the people and what releasing is. If the people escape from being released what happens?
Vocab: bypass (p. 26) "...and would probably be permitted to bypass most of the training."
bypass- to avoid
Chapter 5
Quote: You're ready for the pills, that's all. That's the treatment for stirrings. (p.36)
Reaction: What are the Stirrings? Why do you need to treat it? If you don't treat it what will happen? Why do you have to take the pills for all your life? Why does it start when you're young? Was the akward dream about Fiona Stirrings? Does Stirrings affect how you think? Does Stirrings ever go away?
Vocab: dwelling (p. 37) " Then, in the same way that his own dwelling slipped away behind him as he rounded a corner on his bicycle..."
dwelling- a place to live in
Chapter 6
Quote: Those who were released were sent Elsewhere and never returned to the community. ( p.45)
Reaction: Where is Elsewhere? What do they do to you there? Do they kill you?Is Elsewhere another perfect community? Can you leave Elsewhere? If so, how? Does Elsewhere have its own rules? If there are rules and you break them do you get sent to another community? If they do why?
Vocab: relinquish (p. 41) ".. and that they would relinquish him without protest or appeal."
relinquish- give up
Chapter 7
Quote: He couldn't seem to stop, though for each lapse the discipline wand came again, escalating to a series of painful lashes that left marks on Asher's legs. Eventually, for a period of time, Asher stopped talking altogether, when he was a Three. ( p.53)
Reaction: That's kind of cruel to hit a three year old with a weapon like that. What was the point of the hitting the kids? What would they do if the kids fought back? What do hitting the kids do for them? What happens if the parents talk to the teachers about the hitting and dissaproved it?
Vocab:precision ( p.53) "And precision of language was of language..."
precision-accuracy
Chapter 8
Quote: Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory (p. 57)
Reaction: What does the Receiver of Memory do? Why is this the most important job in the community? Do they have special powers? Why are their rules different than the others? Why do they have to be, in a way, isolated? What makes them different from the other people in the community? What will happen if Jonas fails?
Vocab: integrity (p. 59) "Integrity...Jonas has, like all of, us commited minor transgressions."
integrity- honesty
Chapter 9
Quote: "What happened to her?"he asked nervously. (p. 64)
But his parents looked blank. "We don't know."
Reaction: What did happen to her? Did she fail? Did she break one of the rules? Did the Receiver think that the girl didn't have enough potential? Why is her name never said? Did she do something unforgiveable? Where is she know? Dod they kill her or did they put her in another community? Does he have a special power? Did the Receiver think she was a good student? Was she a good student?
Vocab: exempted (p.66) "The exemption from rudeness startled him."
exemption- to pull away from something
Chapter 10
Quote: I thought there was only us. I thought there was only now. (p. 74)
Reaction: Why don't they give any memories to anybody? The world would be boring and dull if we didn't now the past? How would we know anythiing? Why don't the people in Jonas' community know about the real world? What would happen if they did? Would there be differences if people knew about the world? Would people act in a more less behaved manner?
Vocab: conspicuous (p. 71) "But the most conspicuous difference was the books."
conpicuous-obvious
Chapter 11
Quote: "Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?" (p.80)
Reaction: In the book they tell you the reasons why they took away these things but how did they? Why would they take away a part of nature just like that? Now the people can never see these things. These things bring joy, so do the Commitee of Elders like nobody to even have a chance at fun things? What machinery did they use? What would happen if everybody knew about these things? Would it be chaos?
Vocab: perceived (p.78) "Beyind, through the swirl of what he know, somehow, perceived..."
perceived- to become aware of things through your senses
Chapter 12
Quote: "We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely (p. 91)
Reaction: I agree with Jonas. If everybody and everything is the same then there's less joy. Why did the people want to make the world all the same? Although, there would be less problems there would be less happiness. Colors describe many things in your life. Without them the world would be dull. Why doesn't anybody in Jonas' community ever think about these things? Why doesn't The Giver ever talk about these things to the Comitee. If the people in Jonas' community were in Jnas' position would they want the world to change?
Vocab: capacity (p. 90) "You have the capacity to see beyond."
capacity- the ability to do something
Chapter 13
Quote: "We really have to protect people from wrong choices." (p.93)
Reaction: Why don't let people just live free? That way if they make mistakes they could learn from them. They treat everbody like babies. They don't let them feel pain even though that's a part of life. I don't think that they're decisions should be chosen by other people. I know that bad choices can cause harm but people should still be able to be wrong so that they can learn. Part of protecting people is bad but another part of it is good. This way nobody does anything dumb.
Vocab: access (p.97) " You and I are the only ones with access to these books."
access- the right to enter or use something
Chapter 14
Quote: "They selected me and you to lift that burden from themselves." (p. 107)
Reaction: How come people did that? That's wrong to put pain in only one person and not the rest? Why would somebody be that cruel? People don't even know how much pain the Receiver of Memory goes through. They have to hold all the pain in the world from past dates. One good thing is that they get to have happiness more than anybody. I think that having a Receiver is wrong. Why do they even have a Receiver? What would happen if they didn't have a Receiver?
Vocab: excruciating (p. 105) "..the hunger had caused excruciating spasms..."
excruciating- extremely painful
Chapter 15
Quote: The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said. (p.114)
Reaction: He actually helped Jonas. He taught him pain. He showed him warfare. Warfare is something that Jonas needed to know in order to understand emotional pain. Jonas must have gone through a lot of pain for a 12 year old. There's a part were the Giver is right and wrong. He showed Jonas a major part of being the Receiver. He also gave Jonas alot of pain. The Giver is a good person.
Vocab: anguish (p.112) "...that is such anguish The Giver might need reminding."
anguish- pain
Chapter 16
Quote: "And they won't be part of my life anymore. . . And they'll be well cared for and respected." (p. 118)
Reaction: Why do the kids in the community forget about their parents? Why don't the sons and daughters take care of their parents? How can they even let their parents go to the House of the Old? How come the old forget about their kids? Why are the Old forced to go the House of the Old? Do any of the Old ever refuse to go? What happens if the Old try to leave the House? Are the family members allowed to visit? Do they ever leave the House? Do they ever have to work? Do they have their own bikes?
Vocab: obsolete (p. 120) " ...you used a very generalized word, so meaningless that it almost becomes obselete..."
obsolete-difficult to understand
Chapter 17
Quote: "Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the newchild. (p.129)
Reaction: Why did he make it sound like releasing a baby was nothing? How come the don't keep both of the babies and give one twin to one parent and the other to another person? Why doesn't Jonas' dad even ask where the baby goes to? He acts like if the baby is meaningless? How come the baby has to be released? Does Jonas' dad even care that the baby is being released?
Vocab: overwhelmed (p.128) "..sat down, overwhelmed with feelings of loss"
overwhelmed-to be affected deeply by emotions
Chapter 18-19
The Giver must be going through a hard time. Giving Rosemary pain must have been real hard for him. She asked for Release which really broke his heart. How could Jonas' dad be alright with killing the baby? That must have been hurtful for Jonas to watch the Release .How can this community be so cruel? How can they let babies be released? How can the Nurturers let babies die? Why does the smaller baby have to die? What does it do to make the community better?
Chapter 20
Quote: "Her name was Rosemary." (p.152)
Reaction: How does The Giver live with a little bit of happiness knowing that he caused his daughter to ask for release? Why didn't The Giver try stopping his daughter from asking from Release? Did he select his daughter because he gave favoritism or did he really think she was a good candidate for Receiver? Why didn't he try talking to Rosemary about painful memories? Why did he give her really painful memories? What would have happened if he gave her more happy memories than sad ones? If she became The Receiver would she do a good job? Would she pick Jonas to be the next Receiver?
Vocab: emphatically (p.148) " Jonas shook his head emphatically."
emphatically- with emphasis
Chapter 21
Quote: "First thing tomorrow morning." (p.155)
Reaction: How could Jonas' dad and the Commitee vote for Gabe's release? Who are they to say that he can't live? After all the happiness that Gabe has given Jonas' dad how can he agree with the release of Gabe like nothing? What has Gabe done that makes him deserve death? The way that this society operates is cruel? I think that Jonas' dad is a cruel person. Even though he's a dad and Gabe was like a son he still agrees with release; He's a mean person. I wish that Jonas' dad could see how cruel he is.
Vocab: meticulously (p. 153) "..all the things they had thought had through so meticulously- fell apart."
meticulously- exact
Chapter 22-23
I think that Jonas died. I think that the he really lived in his community but when he got to heaven, which is the other world, he got to be free. I think that he was released when he tried to escape. I think that he died with Gabe. The Giver, im my view, knew that Jonas could only escape if he was killed, therefore he didn't escape.
